Eduardo Natividade-Jesus is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering (DEC) at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra – School of Engineering (ISEC/IPC), where he has served since 1996, and an Invited Professor at the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Sciences & Technology. He served as the DEC/ISEC President from 2017 to 2021 (COVID period), and President of DEC/ISEC Cientific Comité from 2020 to 2022.
He has been responsible for the creation of several courses, including the master’s in Sustainable and Smart Cities (of which he is the current Co-coordinator) and the Master's Degree in Civil Engineering - Specialization in Urban Construction.
He is also a researcher at INESC-Coimbra within the Environmental & Spatial Planning / Sustainable Cities group, where he has been a member of the Scientific Coordination Board since 2020. His scholarly pursuits are grounded in urban regeneration, housing evaluation, and project management, focusing on decision support systems, multicriteria analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), and the nexus of smart, sustainable cities and mobility.
He obtained his 5-year 1st-degree, MSc and PhD in Civil Engineering from UC. His research has pioneered innovative modelling for urban and regional issues, employing computational methods and user-interface design to advance urban regeneration and sustainable mobility.
He is a member of the editorial board for the ISI/WOS journal “Municipal Engineer” (ICE, UK) and contributes to the academic community as an author and editor. He has authored two editorials and 16 journal articles, contributed to book chapters, and participated as an editor in 4 special thematic issues of ISI/WOS journals. His mentorship extends to co-supervising two doctoral students, supervising 25, and co-supervising five master's theses.
His professional expertise encompasses roles such as a Certified Energy Auditor, a Professor within Portugal’s National System of Energy Certification, and a Technical Advisor for the LiderA Sustainability Assessment System. He played a pivotal role in the SIGURB project, a major urban regeneration initiative in partnership with the Coimbra Municipality, and contributed to the development of scientific and professional software. As an Advisor, he grants technical consultancy on identifying opportunities for sustainable construction solutions, analyzing their viability, and evaluating sustainable performance.
As an entrepreneur, Natividade-Jesus is the CEO and co-founder of Spero – Smart Decisions Tools, a company recognized with grants from the EU's Soul-Fi program for urban life optimization (EU-FP7 & FIWARE funds and two more Portuguese companies (one in the engineering consulting field and another in the field of wine tourism).
His extensive publications include journals and conference proceedings in decision support, engineering sustainability, urban analytics, and infrastructure systems.
He has published, among other journals and conference proceedings, in Decision Support Systems, Engineering Sustainability - Institution of Civil Engineers (UK ), Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, International Journal of Geo-Information, Journal of Infrastructure Systems - ASCE, Municipal Engineer - Institution of Civil Engineers (best paper award 2017), Sustainability, Land and Materials.
Among his accolades is a Best Paper award from the ICE - Institution of Civil Engineers in 2017.

SIGUrb
Project SIGUrb under contract, 2003-2007. Financed by the Coimbra City Council. A Decision Support System based on Web and GIS technologies was developed in order to be applied to the renovation project of Coimbra downtown (about 800 buildings).
