3.20.1.1. Courses
Sustainable Systems Engineering Courses SSE courses were developed to address the specific needs of mid-
career engineers, based on extensive surveys of engineers and their employers.
Courses are taught by senior faculty and experienced professionals with applied experience in the industry.
The degree requires 30 credits for completion, and consists of a series of required courses, approved electives
(offered flexibly each semester), and a capstone project.

• Core Competencies for Sustainability (3 credits)
• Industrial Ecology Sustainability Tools (3 credits)
• Sustainable Approaches to System Improvement (4 credits)
• Essential Skills for Engineering Productivity (2 credits)
• Sustainability Initiative Capstone (3 credits)
General Electives in Policy, Impact, and Sustainability Sciences (1-7 credits)
General elective courses will focus on the following topics:
• Sustainable sciences, natural resources, and conservation
• Change management and environmental decision making
• Government sustainable policy and social impacts
Specialization Electives - Take 6-13 credits in one of the following specializations:
Energy Production and Distribution
Courses in the Energy Production and Distribution specialization will focus on the following topics:
• Energy analysis, economics, and policy
